During the Boer-War there was a desperate need for a haven for elderly.

A building fund was established to build this haven and in 1896, the building plans were drawn for four semi-detached cottages. This moderate project would cost at least 1500 pounds.  Fundraising during the War was challenging due to the extreme distress and need, but the Home maintained its fundraising efforts and a grand total of 1 284/15/7 pounds were brought to the fund on 31 December 1903.  The Home could be built.

The day after Princess Christian visited the grave of her son, Prince Christian Victor, she laid the foundation stone of the Princess Christian Home Pretoria in support of the elderly in Transvaal.  Today, this foundation stone is embedded in the western inner wall of the foyer of the new Home in Muckleneuk.
